Your baby <em><strong>can&#8217;t tell you<\/strong><\/em> what a difference it makes &#8211; but they can <em><strong>show you<\/strong><\/em> with better sleep at night and a happier disposition during the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Wrap, Sling, and Carry:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2vBLk4b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-537 size-full\" title=\"Baby Slings and Wraps on Amazon\" src=\"http:\/\/toddrsmith.com\/baby\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/05\/Maya_Wrap.jpg\" alt=\"Baby Slings and Wraps on Amazon\" width=\"438\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/toddrsmith.com\/baby\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/05\/Maya_Wrap.jpg 438w, http:\/\/toddrsmith.com\/baby\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/05\/Maya_Wrap-263x300.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 438px) 100vw, 438px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">We found that <em><strong>carrying our baby<\/strong><\/em> around in a <em><strong>wrap<\/strong><\/em> for periods during the day &#8211; helped them <em><strong>sleep better<\/strong><\/em> at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Here are key features to look for in a wrap:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">A light <em><strong>pad<\/strong><\/em> in the shoulder fabric (more comfortable for <em><strong>your shoulder<\/strong><\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em><strong>Unpadded side rails<\/strong><\/em> make a sling easier to <em><strong>adjust<\/strong><\/em> and work well to <em><strong>discreetly nurse<\/strong><\/em> your baby.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em><strong>Breathable<\/strong><\/em> natural fabric.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Try to get a sling\/wrap that is fully <em><strong>adjustable<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>machine washable<\/strong><\/em> (for all the spit up coming your way).\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Some slings\/wraps have built in <em><strong>pockets<\/strong><\/em> for diapers, wipes, <em><strong>keys<\/strong><\/em>, mobile <em><strong>phone<\/strong><\/em>, etc. that are quite helpful.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I&#8217;ve used several different carriers\/slings\/wraps with my two kids &#8211; but the one I liked the best was the <strong>Maya Wrap<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002ITDA9Y\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=toddrsmith-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002ITDA9Y\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0 <\/a>Baby Ring Sling Carrier. Our baby could recline in it <em><strong>horizontally<\/strong><\/em> or slightly <em><strong>upright<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; and <em><strong>snuggle\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #f5f6f5; font-size: 22px;\">gently<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #f5f6f5; font-size: 22px;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">next to my body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"> It&#8217;s flexible because you can adjust your baby in the sling in <em><strong>different positions<\/strong><\/em> for different times of the day and to suit their liking. Most non-sling carriers only allow your baby to be upright. Gentle burping was part of my routine for both of my kids as I walked around the room holding them and <em><strong>softly singing<\/strong><\/em> to them right before putting them down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It acted as a physical, comforting, metronome that helped them drift off to the <em><strong>rhythmic pats<\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It was less about burping (although that was very helpful when they had to burp) and more about the <em><strong>soft rhythm of my touch<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Tips that can help your baby drift toward sleep and rest more deeply&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Use <em><strong>light-blocking shades or curtains<\/strong><\/em> make their room <em><strong>dark<\/strong><\/em>. You can better control how much sleep they get as the seasons change, and it stays lighter later at night or gets lighter earlier in the morning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Nursing your baby in a <em><strong>dimly lit<\/strong><\/em> room, lying down, next to your warm body, <em><strong>calms a baby<\/strong><\/em> in preparation for sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Hold your baby in your arms in a rocking chair, or <em><strong>walk around their room<\/strong><\/em> while holding them in your arms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Nestle your baby&#8217;s head against the front of your neck.\u00a0 Place your cheek or chin gently beside the top of your baby&#8217;s head. Rock your baby and <em><strong>hum<\/strong><\/em> or sing <em><strong>softly<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em><strong>Swaddle<\/strong><\/em> your baby at night. As newborns, many babies like to be <em><strong>securely<\/strong><\/em> swaddled in a cotton baby blanket. As they grow older &#8211; babies may like to sleep in longer stretches with loose coverings that allow them more freedom of movement. If your baby is <em><strong>dressed<\/strong><\/em> more <em><strong>loosely during the day<\/strong><\/em>, they may begin to <em><strong>associate<\/strong><\/em> nighttime <em><strong>swaddling with sleep<\/strong><\/em>. If your baby gets <em><strong>too hot or too cold<\/strong><\/em>, they may <em><strong>wake more<\/strong><\/em>. The <em><strong>back of the neck<\/strong><\/em> is a good place to touch to check your baby&#8217;s <em><strong>temperature<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">If your baby has allergies, they will most likely sleep more soundly in 100 percent <em><strong>cotton<\/strong><\/em> sleepwear. Some babies are irritated by, sensitive to and\/or allergic to synthetic fabrics like <em><strong>polyester<\/strong><\/em>. Detergents with <em><strong>dyes and perfumes<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>fabric softeners<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>dryer sheets<\/strong><\/em> can not only irritate your baby &#8211; but be <em><strong>harmful<\/strong><\/em> to them. You&#8217;ll hear some people say, &#8220;Ah it&#8217;s not going to kill them.&#8221; or &#8220;If it wasn&#8217;t safe the government wouldn&#8217;t allow it to be sold.&#8221; Unfortunately, the <em><strong>toxins<\/strong><\/em> in these products <em><strong>build up gradually in our bodies over time<\/strong><\/em> and can cause problems <em><strong>later in life<\/strong><\/em>. It often takes years to see the harmful effects, and therefore the <em><strong>dangers are often dismissed<\/strong><\/em> until enough time has passed and damage has been done. For example, toxic substances like <em><strong>asbestos<\/strong><\/em> and others that were <em><strong>once considered safe<\/strong><\/em>, are now banned. All these &#8220;<em><strong>drop in the bucket&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>toxins that are a part of our daily lives <em><strong>add up over time<\/strong><\/em> and eventually <em><strong>overload<\/strong><\/em> our systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Making loving deep <em><strong>eye contact<\/strong><\/em> with your baby during the <em><strong>day<\/strong><\/em> can help with <em><strong>brain development<\/strong><\/em> and help you bond with your baby. <em><strong>Avoid it<\/strong><\/em>, however, in the <em><strong>middle of the night<\/strong><\/em> when you are trying to help them <em><strong>back to sleep<\/strong><\/em>. Parental eye contact can raise a baby&#8217;s heart rate, blood pressure and <em><strong>excite<\/strong><\/em> your baby to be <em><strong>more awake<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Your baby&#8217;s <em><strong>stomach<\/strong><\/em> is a little bigger than the size of <em><strong>their fist<\/strong><\/em>. That&#8217;s why they <em><strong>feed<\/strong><\/em> on average every <em><strong>3 to 4 hours at night<\/strong><\/em> and even more than that during the day. <em><strong>Feeding<\/strong><\/em> them right <em><strong>before bed<\/strong><\/em> can help them <em><strong>sleep more soundly<\/strong><\/em> for that first few hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">For <strong>daytime naps<\/strong><em>, carry your baby in a <em><strong>sling\/wrap<\/strong><\/em> during the day. When your baby falls asleep in the wrap, carefully lie down on your back with them and <em><strong>take a cozy nap together<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; their belly resting peacefully on your chest.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em><strong>Change<\/strong><\/em> wet or soiled <em><strong>diapers<\/strong><\/em> right <em><strong>before<\/strong><\/em> a <em><strong>bedtime feeding<\/strong><\/em>. This way your baby will be all set if they fall asleep during the feeding and go straight to bed. If, <em><strong>however<\/strong><\/em>, your baby consistently has a <em><strong>bowel movement<\/strong><\/em> during or right after a feeding, then you&#8217;ll want to change them <em><strong>after<\/strong><\/em> the feeding, so you&#8217;re not changing twice in a row.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I have read feedback from some parents who have helped their baby <em><strong>sleep in longer stretches<\/strong><\/em> by <em><strong>decreasing<\/strong><\/em> the time between their baby&#8217;s feedings starting in the early evening. So if they usually would feed every 3 hours the parent would feed every 2 hours during the time <em><strong>right before bed<\/strong><\/em> which gave their baby a <em><strong>full stomach<\/strong><\/em> and resulted in sleeping <em><strong>four to five hour<\/strong><\/em> stretches at a time during the night.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Tips to try when your baby wakes up in the middle of the night&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">A supportive laying on of <em><strong>your hands<\/strong><\/em> on your baby may be enough to <em><strong>comfort<\/strong><\/em> them <em><strong>back to sleep<\/strong> <strong>without<\/strong><\/em> having to <em><strong>pick them up<\/strong><\/em> which could initially <em><strong>wake them more<\/strong><\/em> and take much longer for baby and parent to get back to sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Other variations to try are <em><strong>rubbing<\/strong><\/em> in a gentle circle on your baby&#8217;s back or chest, <em><strong>patting<\/strong><\/em> so gently their back or bottom in a consistent <em><strong>rhythm<\/strong><\/em> like a heartbeat.\u00a0 When it time to take your hands away do it extremely <em><strong>slowly<\/strong><\/em>, gradually <em><strong>releasing<\/strong><\/em> the <em><strong>pressure<\/strong><\/em> of your touch on them so you don&#8217;t startle them awake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Taking <em><strong>slow deep breaths<\/strong><\/em> with your baby in the middle of the night can help <em><strong>soothe<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>calm<\/strong><\/em> them and help them <em><strong>back to sleep<\/strong><\/em>. This works great as they grow older also.
