but in our homes, <em><strong>we artificially control<\/strong><\/em> our environment with interior <em><strong>lighting<\/strong><\/em>, TV, DVD, computer, radio, CD <em><strong>sights and sounds<\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It is up to us to ensure that <em><strong>we create<\/strong><\/em> day time and night time clues for our baby so they learn the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">At <em><strong>night<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; in a house filled with bright artificial light, and loud &#8220;daytime sounds&#8221; of people, TV, computer and\/or stereo &#8211; we have eliminated all the clues that would otherwise teach our baby the <em><strong>natural transition from day to night<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">There is a <em><strong>natural<\/strong><\/em> and gradual progress from day to night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">During the <em><strong>day<\/strong><\/em> it&#8217;s naturally <em><strong>bright<\/strong><\/em>, and people and animals are making lots of <em><strong>sounds<\/strong><\/em> as they go about their daytime activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Then as <em><strong>night<\/strong><\/em> approaches, it gradually gets <em><strong>darker<\/strong><\/em> and darker, animals start to go to <em><strong>bed<\/strong><\/em>, people head into their houses to relax, and eventually, they go to bed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">This <em><strong>natural progression from bright and loud to dim and quiet<\/strong><\/em> can help your baby slide right into sleep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It&#8217;s calming and if you create it day after day &#8211; they know <em><strong>what to expect<\/strong><\/em> which is <em><strong>comforting<\/strong><\/em> to them in this crazy new world they&#8217;ve entered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">During the day:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Your home should be filled with <em><strong>light<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Talk in a <em><strong>normal volume<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; alert &#8211; awake &#8211; not hushed voices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">This is the time for all your normal <em><strong>daytime activities<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; which will teach your baby that this bright, potentially activity and people filled atmosphere is <em><strong>day<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">At Night:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Begin using <em><strong>quieter voices<\/strong><\/em> which your baby will learn signals night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">When a baby learns that <em><strong>nighttime is for sleeping<\/strong><\/em>, they will sleep more easily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em><strong>Dim the lights<\/strong><\/em> right before you begin your nighttime routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Turn down the TV or Stereo to a <em><strong>lower volume<\/strong><\/em> or turn them <em><strong>off<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">A baby who is <em><strong>well fed<\/strong><\/em> during the day will probably sleep better at night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">If your baby wakes in the night, <em><strong>don&#8217;t turn on lights<\/strong><\/em>, and don&#8217;t take your baby into a well-lit room. <em><strong>Too much light<\/strong><\/em> will make them think it\u2019s <em><strong>time to wake up<\/strong><\/em> and they may become too active to go back to sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Keep your <em><strong>interaction<\/strong><\/em> with them <em><strong>low key<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>calm<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em><strong>Light blocking<\/strong><\/em> curtains or shades can help <em><strong>you control<\/strong><\/em> the transition and timing from day to night and again from night to morning &#8211;
