is like a person who neglects their health and then treats only symptoms when they feel bad &#8211; instead of addressing the source of the illness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Set your baby up to succeed at getting a healthy nights sleep &#8211; without having them become <strong>dependent<\/strong> on a single trick or aid. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">You want your baby to be able to <strong>put themselves to sleep<\/strong> in a non stressful way.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">They need to learn that sleep is not a <em>fearful<\/em> time &#8211; but rather <a title=\"Sleep Through the Night and Transitioning Techniques\" href=\"http:\/\/toddrsmith.com\/baby\/big-list-baby-sleep-tips\/sleep-night-transitioning-techniques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a <em>peaceful<\/em> time<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em>You<\/em> set up that peaceful mood. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">This gift will follow them through childhood and into adulthood.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It&#8217;s complicated because there are many aspects to consider and it can include a unique combination of factors for each child and their families. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">The following chapters contain a multitude of things to try to create a plan that works for you and your baby. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It&#8217;s up to <em><strong>you<\/strong> <\/em>to set your baby up for success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I&#8217;ll start with some things to keep in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Establish a Solid Routine<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Having a <a title=\"Developing a Consistent Rhythm &amp; Routine\" href=\"http:\/\/toddrsmith.com\/baby\/baby-sleep-tips-contents\/developing-consistent-rhythm-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consistent routine<\/a> is very important for baby sleep success. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">If their routine changes from day to day &#8211; then this can work against your efforts to help them sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">An ideal technique to put your baby to sleep may not work consistently if you don&#8217;t provide a solid and consistent foundation (<strong>rhythm<\/strong>) upon which to build.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Establish your child&#8217;s routine (waking times, meal times, bedtimes, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Repetition and Patience<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Whatever approach and techniques you choose&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"> Stick with it for <strong>at least a week<\/strong>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Don\u2019t give up right away, even if it seems difficult. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Your baby\u2019s sleep habits take time to establish. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">During that time you may have to fine tune the approach as you see what is working and what is not. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">If you&#8217;ve been working with a technique for more than a week and it&#8217;s not working &#8211; and &#8211; you&#8217;re out of ideas to fine tune it &#8211; then that technique may not be the right fit for your child. Try something new.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Children Keep Changing<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Remember that no single approach will work with all babies and when you find one that works for your baby, <strong>it may not won&#8217;t work all the time<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Children keep changing so what worked last week may not work this week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Keep adjusting and refining the technique as needed. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Cut yourself some slack. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Your target should be to find a method that works <strong>most<\/strong> of the time for your baby.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-size: 24px;\">Things Stop Working<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Here are some common reasons your baby may not be sleeping &#8211; even after they have learned to sleep through the night. These may seem obvious now, but when your baby has been sleeping through the night and then they start waking up night after night you may not think of these right away. Most babies don\u2019t sleep well when they are&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Teething<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Have an ear infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Have gas (digestion problems or allergies)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Are sick with a cold<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><em>Understand that if any of these is the case, you may have to <strong>deviate<\/strong> from the techniques that have been working in order to help your baby through these special times. This breaking of the routine my set them back and when they are all better it may take them some extra time to <strong>relearn healthy sleep habits<\/strong> while they get back into their <a title=\"Developing a Consistent Rhythm &amp; Routine\" href=\"http:\/\/toddrsmith.com\/baby\/baby-sleep-tips-contents\/developing-consistent-rhythm-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consistent routine<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Valuable Baby Sleep Nuggets<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Sleep when your baby sleeps. This is your chance to get some needed sleep and if you miss it &#8211; you&#8217;ll be extra tired when you&#8217;re baby is not sleeping and you&#8217;re up with them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Drinking <em><strong>caffeine<\/strong> <\/em>can affect your baby and keep them awake if you are breastfeeding. Babies are more susceptible to caffeine than adults, and I have read that the caffeine in a large coffee, can affect a newborn for more than <em><strong>80 hours<\/strong><\/em> through breast milk!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">It&#8217;s <em><strong>normal<\/strong> <\/em>for a baby to wake in the night because they are hungry or want some love.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Trust Your Gut<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">You intuitively know more than you may think. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Start with approaches and tips that resonate with you.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Try out these tips <strong>one at a time<\/strong> and then in combinations to see how your baby reacts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">As you test out various approaches and techniques &#8211; be observant and mindful. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">You&#8217;re the guiding force.
